Gem of the Week: The Gurnard’s Head, Cornwall
It's official, our first 'Gem of the Week' of the Devon & Cornwall collection is here, and it's a good'un!
There are pubs… and then there’s The Gurnard’s Head.
Perched on the wild Atlantic coast near St Ives, this mustard-yellow Cornish inn has long been a beacon for walkers, food lovers and anyone with a soft spot for windswept views and a proper pint by the fire. It’s the sort of place where muddy boots are welcome, dogs curl up under tables, and the smell of woodsmoke lingers in the air.
Inside, it’s cosy and characterful, with low beams, flagstone floors and walls hung with artwork from some of Cornwall’s best creatives. The bar is stocked with West Country ales, natural wines and everything you’d hope for after a stomp along the coast path.
The menu is hyper-seasonal and built around the best local produce. With line-caught fish, perfectly aged beef, Cornish crab, and vegetables grown just down the road. It’s all served without fuss, but cooked with serious skill. Here you will find hearty, honest food done exceptionally well.
If you’re not ready to leave after lunch (and honestly, who would be?), they’ve got rooms too. Simple, stylish and perfectly suited to post-dinner snoozing. Wake up to sea air, freshly brewed coffee and plans for another slow day.
The Gurnard’s Head is the kind of pub you wish was on your doorstep, but then again, half the magic is in the journey to find it.
