Earlier this week, we spoke about pubs and how they are such an essential part of the community. Similarly, café's hold a special place in the heart of the great british high street. A place to pause, refuel, catch up with a friend or simply sit and watch the world go by. Nestled in the centre of Stroud, Woodruffs Café captures all of that and more. Opened back in 1998, it is thought to be the UK’s first wholly organic café and more than two decades later, it is still very much at the forefront of the town’s thriving independent scene.

Stroud itself is known for its creativity and sense of community. Walk through the town on any given day and you’ll find bustling markets, independent shops, and a lively arts scene. Woodruffs fits seamlessly into this fabric. It is a place that feels genuinely welcoming, built around the simple idea of serving fresh, good food with integrity.

The menu changes with the seasons and is shaped by what’s available locally, but you can always count on a thoughtful selection of dishes that cater for everyone, with plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Breakfast is a highlight, with organic porridge, fresh fruit compotes, and hearty brunches. At lunchtime, you’ll find wholesome specials like spiced lentil stews, homemade quiches, and vibrant salads. Everything is made from scratch in their small kitchen, and you can taste the difference.

Beyond the food, there’s a strong commitment to sustainability and ethical sourcing, something that Woodruffs has championed since long before it became fashionable. The coffee is organic and fairly traded, the meat is free-range, and the suppliers are often based just a stone’s throw away. It is a place where you can enjoy your meal knowing it has been thoughtfully and carefully considered from start to finish.

The space itself is light and laid-back, with a small number of tables inside and a couple tucked outside when the sun makes an appearance. It is the sort of place where you can come in muddy walking boots and feel just as welcome as you would in your Sunday best. In a town like Stroud, everyone feeling welcome is something that people value.

For those visiting the Cotswolds and looking for a hidden gem that offers more than just a good coffee, Woodruffs is the place. Whether you’re stopping off after a walk along the canal, browsing the markets, or just in need of a quiet moment, it’s a café that feels like a little pocket of calm and kindness.

We are proud to feature Woodruffs Café in our collection. Small, thoughtful, and run with heart, it’s exactly the kind of place we want to shine a light on.
