The Retreats Group: The best way to experience Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire has a way of bringing everything together. Coastline, open space, good food and places to stay that feel considered rather than overworked. If you’re looking for the best place to stay in Wales, this corner of the country makes a strong case for itself.
At the centre of it is Retreats Group — a collection of four gems around St Davids that, together, offer a well-rounded way to experience the area. A contemporary hotel, a castle stay, a peaceful retreat and a three-rosette restaurant, all connected but each with its own identity.
Where to stay
A short walk from the centre of St Davids, Twr y Felin is set within a restored windmill and reimagined as a contemporary art hotel. Interiors are calm and minimal, layered with over 250 original artworks that reflect the surrounding landscape.
Rooms range from simple, well-designed spaces to the Tyddewi Suite, set within the original tower with wide views across the peninsula. The Awen Spa adds a quieter side to the stay, while the location places you within easy reach of the coast, cathedral and surrounding walks.
It works as a base, but equally as somewhere to spend time in.
Set on elevated ground with views stretching across St Brides Bay, Roch Castle is shaped by its position as much as its history. Originally dating back to the 12th century, it has been carefully restored to retain its structure while introducing modern comfort.
Rooms are built into the fabric of the castle, each slightly different, with considered details throughout. The Sun Room, a glass-fronted space at the top, looks out across the coastline and surrounding countryside.
It’s a distinctive stay, but still feels easy and relaxed.
Just outside St Davids, Penrhiw Priory offers a quieter setting. Surrounded by woodland, gardens and meadow, it sits slightly removed from the busier parts of the area.
Originally a Victorian vicarage, the building has been restored with a focus on space and comfort. Interiors retain original features, with contemporary touches that soften the overall feel. Rooms are generous, with views across the grounds, and the pace here is noticeably slower.
With self catering and bed & breakfast both available, it works particularly well for longer, more settled stays.
Where to eat
Located within Twr y Felin, Blas Restaurant brings everything together. Awarded three AA Rosettes, it focuses on seasonal menus shaped by Pembrokeshire’s coastline and surrounding farmland.
Seafood arrives fresh from nearby waters, alongside Welsh lamb and locally foraged ingredients. The approach is refined but straightforward, allowing the quality of produce to lead.
The space itself reflects the wider hotel — thoughtful, well-designed, and comfortable without feeling formal.
Why it works
Each part of the Retreats Group offers something slightly different, but they’re close enough to move between easily.
You can stay in one place and dine in another, or split your time across a couple of properties to see different sides of the area. The result is a stay that feels varied without needing to travel far.
For those planning a Wales getaway, it offers a combination that’s difficult to replicate — strong accommodation, delicious food, and a setting that you will fall in love with.
