Big Green Adventures, Crantock
Beach Rd, Crantock, Newquay TR8 5RN
On the wide sands of Crantock Beach, where the Gannel estuary meets the Atlantic, Big Green Adventures has been delivering small-group water sports experiences since 2011. Operating on this National Trust-managed stretch of Cornish coastline, it is the only regulated activity provider based directly on the beach — and it shows in the way everything is run.
Big Green Adventures offers professional tuition and rental in surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, coasteering, bodyboarding and bellyboarding, alongside beach safety courses designed to give families confidence in the water. Throughout the season, regular kids clubs, ladies surf clubs and tailored sessions add further depth to the programme.
Group sizes are deliberately kept small (no more than six per session), allowing for genuinely personalised coaching suited to complete beginners and more confident surfers alike. All equipment is included and carefully maintained, removing any barriers to getting started.
Crantock itself does much of the work. Known for feeling more open and less crowded than neighbouring beaches, its mix of dunes, estuary waters and Atlantic swell creates a varied playground. Sessions are structured but relaxed, always grounded in safety and a strong understanding of the sea.
Environmental responsibility runs through the business. Operations are solar powered, wetsuits are made from natural rubber, boards and kayaks include recycled materials, ocean-friendly products are used throughout, and regular beach cleans are part of the calendar. The team is WiSe accredited, with staff trained to minimise disturbance to marine life.
Accredited by Surfing England and licensed through AALA, with coaches holding recognised Beach Lifeguard qualifications, Big Green Adventures combines professionalism with genuine enthusiasm for the coastline it calls home.
For visitors to Cornwall looking for more than a casual beach day, this remains one of Crantock’s most established and well-run ways to experience the water properly.
