Brightwater Lodge, Loch Sunart
Acharacle PH36 4JG
Brightwater Lodge is one of those rare places where the temptation to simply sit and look out of the window can derail an entire day’s plans. Handcrafted from local stone and timber on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the lodge occupies a private, elevated position above Loch Sunart, looking south across the water to Eilean Mòr and the mountains beyond.
Those views have shaped the house itself. Huge full-height windows, framed by Norway spruce trunks, fill the living space with light and turn the landscape into an ever-changing backdrop. It is beautiful in good weather, but perhaps even better when the Highlands turn wild and atmospheric outside.
Wildlife is woven into the experience. Golden and white-tailed eagles can be spotted overhead, while otters, badgers and red deer inhabit the surrounding landscape. Pine martens are particularly special visitors, regularly appearing around the lodge and sometimes arriving while it is still light during the longer summer days. Red deer can also be spotted along the track and behind the lodge, occasionally venturing remarkably close.
Sleeping four, Brightwater has two ensuite bedrooms. The generous ground-floor master has a super-king bed and sliding patio doors leading directly into the garden, alongside a newly refurbished luxury bathroom with a large freestanding bath and spacious separate shower. Upstairs, reached via a substantial hand-carved staircase, is a twin bedroom with its own ensuite bathroom. Downstairs, a well-equipped kitchen, separate utility room and bright, airy living area make the lodge every bit as appealing during a Highland winter as it is in summer, with underfloor heating and a log-burning stove adding to the appeal.
Outside, the patio is positioned for long evenings overlooking the loch. After sunset, Ardnamurchan’s exceptionally dark skies take over, with the Milky Way visible on clear nights and even the possibility of catching the Northern Lights.
It would be easy to stay put, but ancient oakwoods, beaches and miles of rugged west coast scenery surround Loch Sunart. Boat trips offer the chance to explore the coastline and its wildlife from the water, while guests at Brightwater also have access to fishing on several local lochs through the lodge’s seasonal fishing licence, which runs from March to October. Guided fishing experiences can be arranged locally too, while those bringing their own equipment can kayak on the loch. Days on the beach, walking through the surrounding landscape and visits to Ardnamurchan Distillery provide plenty more reasons to explore.
Brightwater is luxurious, but its greatest luxury is its position: few distractions, very few neighbours and an extraordinary amount of wild Scotland unfolding immediately outside the glass. It is telling how many guests return. This is the sort of place that can quickly become less somewhere you once stayed and more somewhere you find yourself wanting to come back to.
