Burnhead Farm, Whin Loan, Kilsyth, Glasgow G65 9LG

Burnhead Bothies manages a clever trick. From its hillside setting you can look across the Kelvin Valley towards Glasgow and, on the clearest days, as far as the mountains of Arran – yet Glasgow, Stirling and the central belt remain surprisingly accessible. It feels properly away from things without requiring an expedition to get there.

The bothy sits on Duncan and Ashley MacGregor’s 1,600-acre working hill farm in the Kilsyth Hills, where Duncan is the third generation of his family to farm. Pedigree Scottish Blackface sheep and Charolais cattle share the land with Highland cattle and Swiss Valais sheep, and the cabin itself sits right among it all. As the owners rather perfectly put it, your only neighbours are sheep.

Inside, the timber-framed bothy sleeps up to four, with a separate double bedroom and a sofa bed in the open-plan living space. A little wood-burning stove keeps things cosy, while the kitchen has a gas hob and oven, and the bathroom manages the welcome luxuries of a rainfall shower and proper flushing toilet.

The most memorable bath, however, is outside. Set on the private decking, the outdoor tub lets you soak in hot water with the hillside stretching beyond – and quite possibly a few curious sheep wandering past. There is also a fire pit and outdoor seating for evenings spent toasting marshmallows, playing games and watching the landscape rather than a screen.

That last part comes naturally here. Burnhead is genuinely off-grid, with solar panels providing low-voltage lighting and charging points but no Wi-Fi or conventional plug sockets. Water comes from a private spring, sheep’s wool is used for insulation and duvets, and the building itself was constructed from sustainable timber. The lack of technology quickly becomes part of the pleasure.

Walks begin from the door, while Loch Lomond and the Trossachs can be reached for bigger days out. Kilsyth is only a few miles away when supplies or dinner are required.

For couples, friends or a small family, Burnhead offers something increasingly difficult to manufacture: proper quiet. Come for the outdoor bath and those enormous views, but don’t be surprised if watching sheep wander past with the radio on and the fire lit becomes the part you remember most.
