Glen Garioch Distillery, Oldmeldrum

Distillery Rd, Oldmeldrum, Inverurie AB51 0ES

There is a pleasing sense of discovery to Glen Garioch. While many whisky journeys point west or towards Speyside, this historic distillery sits quietly in the market town of Oldmeldrum, around 17 miles from Aberdeen, surrounded by the fertile farmland that has earned this corner of Scotland its reputation as the Granary of Aberdeenshire.

Whisky has been made here since 1797, making Glen Garioch one of Scotland’s oldest operating distilleries. Founded by the Manson brothers, its story has stretched across more than two centuries of changing ownership, wartime closures and reinvention, yet production remains rooted in the traditional skills and ingredients that first made this part of Aberdeenshire such a natural home for whisky.

The best way to understand it is to step through the distillery gates. Visitor experiences take you into the production story, following the journey from the natural ingredients through the time-honoured processes used to create Glen Garioch’s Highland single malt. Guides bring the history to life along the way, with the relatively intimate nature of the experience allowing plenty of opportunity to ask questions, get closer to the process and understand what is happening beyond the machinery and stills.

Naturally, a visit leads towards the whisky itself. Tastings introduce different Glen Garioch expressions, including the distillery’s signature hearty, malt-forward style, while selected experiences delve deeper into its casks and rarer releases. There are opportunities to take something particularly personal home too, with visitors able to hand-fill their own bottle from a specially selected cask and label it themselves.

Even the name offers a little local character. Glen Garioch is pronounced “Geery”, taken from the Doric dialect still spoken across this part of Aberdeenshire, and means the Valley of the Garioch – the landscape in which the distillery has spent its entire life.

You don’t need to arrive as a whisky expert to enjoy it. For enthusiasts, there is more than enough history and craft to get stuck into; for everyone else, Glen Garioch offers an engaging introduction to an industry woven deeply into Scotland’s identity – experienced in the very place where more than 200 years of that story has unfolded.
