The Held, Cefn Cantref, Brecon LD3 8LT

At the end of a private lane two miles south of Brecon, where 200-year-old stone farm buildings sit surrounded by rolling countryside with direct views to Pen y Fan, hosts Aina and Bob run three self-catering cottages that regularly earn five-star reviews for their eye-for-detail approach. The converted barns at The Held, an old hill farm within Brecon Beacons National Park, retain original features whilst delivering thoroughly modernised comfort, the sort of place where guests mention everything from Welsh cakes in welcome baskets to spotlessly clean kitchens in their testimonials.

The Old Farmhouse, the original 200-year-old farmhouse, sleeps four across king-size bedroom with ensuite double-ended bathtub and separate walk-in shower, plus twin bedroom with its own shower room across the landing. Downstairs, the fully equipped kitchen and dining area open into a lounge with ample sofas, flat-screen TV, and log burner, ideal for post-walk unwinding. Many original features remain visible throughout, further adding to the charm.

The Welsh Longhouse, the largest cottage sleeping four to six, reverses the layout with bedrooms below and living spaces above. King-size ensuite, twin room with family bathroom, and optional additional double ensuite provide flexible sleeping arrangements. Upstairs, the large open-plan kitchen, dining area, and lounge feature vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame those Pen y Fan views perfectly. The spacious feeling throughout suits families or groups particularly well.

Both cottages deliver fibre-to-premises superfast broadband, Nespresso machines, dishwashers, flat-screen smart TVs with iPlayer, fresh white bedding and towels, quality toiletries, fully equipped kitchens with all necessary cooking equipment, outdoor patios with seating, dedicated parking, and access to an EV charger. Aina & Bob live on-site in the old stables, providing welcome packs that often include Prosecco for special occasions alongside those much loved Welsh cakes.

The location proves perfect for exploring Brecon Beacons. Pen y Fan walks start nearby, waterfall trails at Pontneddfechan sit within easy reach, and Brecon town, with its shops, pubs, restaurants, and Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, is two miles away. The Dark Sky Reserve status means clear nights deliver shooting stars, Jupiter, and constellations visible from cottage patios. Local wildlife includes hares that occasionally play outside bedroom windows at dawn, adding to the magic of these special stays.
