Mill Farm Croft, Tannach Road, Thrumster, Caithness KW1 5TX

There are no rows of tents at Mill Farm Croft. No communal glamping village, no busy facilities block and, once you have walked the couple of minutes up from your car, no immediate neighbours either. Instead, there is a single bell tent occupying its own enclosed patch of a small working croft near Thrumster, five miles south of Wick.

That simplicity is exactly the point.

The tent sits up the hill where the owners found the best views, looking across crofting land towards the sea and positioned to make the most of Caithness’s enormous skies and summer sunsets. During the long light evenings of June and July, guests can stay outside remarkably late, sitting around the fire pit as the light changes and listening to birds, insects and the occasional lamb rather than traffic or other campers.

Inside, things remain deliberately unfussy but comfortable. The bell tent sleeps two adults, with a proper bed dressed in crisp linen, a sofa which can provide an alternative sleeping arrangement, a small stove and the crockery and cutlery needed for a simple breakfast. Logs and kindling are provided, along with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco and marshmallows for toasting around the fire.

This is very much part of a real croft rather than a polished resort created to look rural. The owners keep an award-winning flock of North Country Cheviot sheep, and guests who are interested can join them for a complimentary walk around the croft and an introduction to its four-legged residents. Income from the little glamping venture helps towards the costs of keeping the flock.

Privacy is carefully protected too. Mill Farm Croft accepts just two adults, with no children or pets, and cars remain down at the designated parking area.

Despite that feeling of seclusion, you aren’t cut off. The Smiddy Inn at Thrumster is within walking distance for food and a drink, while archaeology, boat trips, whisky experiences and the wider Caithness coastline provide plenty to explore. The NC500 passes close by too.

Following storm damage, the bell tent is due to return for a short summer season in 2027. For travellers seeking something small-scale, personal and genuinely uncommercial, that limited availability feels entirely appropriate.
