Quabbs Cabin, Powys
Upper House Farm, Rhos-y-Meirch, Knighton LD7 1PD
In historic Quabbs Meadow near Knighton, where rolling Mid Wales hills meet unpolluted dark skies and Offa’s Dyke runs along the opposite valley ridge. Owners Paul and Steph spent three years hand-building a secluded cabin that earned Visit Wales Gold Award within months of opening, for good reason. Located on their working sheep farm at Rhos y Meirch, the off-grid retreat blends skilled craftsmanship with eco-consciousness. Using repurposed materials, reclaimed timber and locally sourced elements, Quabbs Cabin is the very definition of rustic luxury. You will be hard pressed to find anything quite like this in the whole of Wales, making it a must visit for those seeking something special.
The handcrafted cabin sleeps two in romantic seclusion. Vaulted ceilings reveal bespoke beams, soft lighting creates intimacy, huge French doors frame Cwm Whitton Hill views eastward. Every window offers a different countryside vista: south-west across grazing meadows where pedigree flocks sometimes graze toward hazy Radnor Forest, westward over Rhos Hill, Graig Hill, and Black Hill for sunset watching. The king-size handmade bed overlooks the wonderful Welsh countryside, making it the ideal spot for morning tea whilst surveying the landscape. The very aesthetic copper roll-top bath invites long soaks, whilst the rainfall shower provides invigoration. The well equipped kitchen allows slow suppers, whilst the wood burner ensures cosy evenings on the soft sofas whilst surrounded by throws, cushions and blankets.
Outside, the wraparound porch and sun deck capture sunrise and sunset, whilst the wood-fired hot tub provides countryside-view soaking. The newly added infrared Sauna Shack includes cold plunge and outdoor shower for contrast therapy, allowing you to wind down in the best day after a day of exploring. Minimal light pollution makes stargazing exceptional, with complimentary curated kit including telescopes, red-light torches and star-themed blankets for magical nights beneath vast Welsh skies. The enclosed garden makes this stay a great option for those with dogs, whilst miles of scenic trails start from the doorstep, including easy walks onto Offa’s Dyke.
The farm location provides authentic working countryside experience, with pedigree sheep and wildlife spotting including red kites, providing genuine rural tranquility. Market towns, historic castles, National Trust properties sit within short drive, though tearing away from seclusion proves difficult in this one of a kind hidden gem.
