Set within Cale Park, where Wincanton meets the river that gave the town its Domesday name, River Cale Café is a place built around thoughtful choices rather than quick wins. Opened in September 2022, it occupies a modern, purpose-built space overlooking the recreation ground, with views across playing fields, playgrounds and open green space that immediately set a relaxed tone.

The café is family-run and founded with a clear purpose. After a coeliac diagnosis reshaped how food had to be approached at home, the aim here became simple but meaningful: to create somewhere genuinely inclusive, where dietary needs are understood rather than accommodated as an afterthought. That intention runs through the entire menu.

Food spans breakfast through lunch, with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients forming the backbone. Full English breakfasts sit comfortably alongside avocado on toasted sourdough, while gluten-free bacon sandwiches arrive properly considered, paired with fresh salads rather than compromises. Portions are generous without being heavy-handed, and the gluten-free offering extends across the menu, prepared with confidence by someone who understands the requirements first-hand. Vegan and vegetarian dishes receive the same care, and the cake counter leans more adventurous than standard café fare, offering something tempting whatever your preferences.

Coffee matters here too. Bo Mo Beans provide the foundation, with attention paid to how drinks are made and served, including alternative milks done properly rather than reluctantly. Inside, the seating layout allows space to settle in without feeling crowded, while outside tables make the most of the park setting when the weather allows.

Families are particularly well catered for. Dogs are welcome, complete with their own ice cream, and upstairs Mini Town Play offers role-play sessions throughout the day, giving children space to explore while parents enjoy a moment of calm below. It’s a café that feels kind in practice as well as intention.
