The Bridge House, Ballintuim
The Bridge House, Ballintuim, Blairgowrie PH10 7PX
It is difficult to imagine a more unique place to spend a few nights in Perthshire. The Bridge House stretches directly across the River Ardle near Ballintuim, its stone arches, turrets and gatehouse rising above the water like something from a Scottish fairytale.
The story begins with artist and architect Patrick Allan Fraser, who bought the Blackcraig Estate in 1847 and spent decades reshaping it according to his own artistic vision. He designed The Bridge House in 1871 as an elaborate baronial entrance to the estate, complete with enormous wooden gates across the road and accommodation for the gatekeepers above. Spiral staircases connected the house to the gates below, while stables and quarters for the stable boy were later added alongside.
By the beginning of this century, windows had been bricked up and roofs were collapsing. A sympathetic restoration in 2010 gave the Category A-listed building a new purpose as two holiday homes: The Bridge House and Bridge Cottage.
Each sleeps four, or the two can be connected via the walkway bridge to accommodate a group of eight. Interiors retain plenty of the building’s eccentricity, with thick stone walls, spiral stairs and views along the river joined by comfortable bedrooms, properly equipped kitchens and log fires. The Bridge House also has its own sauna and terrace, while guests booking both properties have access to the garden and plenty of space to settle in.
The setting adds another layer. Water runs directly beneath the building, sheep graze in the surrounding fields and days begin with birdsong rather than traffic. Mimi’s warm welcome is mentioned repeatedly by guests, along with the feeling of being left to enjoy this wonderfully peaceful corner of Perthshire at your own pace.
Blairgowrie is around 15 minutes away for pubs, restaurants and supplies, while Glenshee and the surrounding countryside open up excellent walking and days outdoors.
Staying here also contributes towards the continuing conservation of the building, with further restoration still planned. That makes The Bridge House more than an unusual holiday cottage: it is a chance to spend a few days inside a remarkable piece of Scottish architectural history while helping secure its next chapter.
