The Granary Balgone Estate, North Berwick EH39 5PB

The Granary has the rare advantage of feeling properly tucked away without actually being remote. Set on the working Balgone Estate in the East Lothian countryside, around two miles from North Berwick, this recently renovated farmhouse puts acres of farmland, lakes and walking routes outside the door, while beaches, restaurants and some of Scotland’s finest links golf are only a short drive away.

Sleeping up to eight across four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the house has been designed for the kind of stays where spending time together is as important as exploring. Generous living spaces give families and groups room to spread out, with a separate snug when a little peace is required and an open fire for slower evenings indoors. At the centre is a large kitchen and dining table made for long breakfasts, home-cooked suppers and opening another bottle once nobody needs to drive anywhere.

Outside, the sense of escape becomes even stronger. The private hot tub is an obvious highlight, while the barbecue comes into its own on warmer evenings. Views stretch across the surrounding farm, with horses and pigs among the neighbours, and guests can head out to explore Balgone’s lakes and wider estate directly from the house.

There is plenty to tempt you beyond the front gate too. North Berwick and the East Lothian coastline are close by, bringing beaches, independent places to eat and an extraordinary concentration of golf courses within easy reach. Those wanting to make more of the estate itself can arrange activities including clay shooting, while the changing seasons bring another side to Balgone, from its sunflower trail to Scotland’s largest pumpkin patch.

Yet The Granary works just as well when very little is planned. Previous guests return for the peace and quiet as much as the facilities, and it isn’t difficult to understand why. Swim, walk, cook, soak in the hot tub, sit by the fire and allow the day to unfold.

For family gatherings, golfing trips or a few days away with friends, it offers something particularly appealing: the space and privacy of a country house, the character of a working Scottish estate and the coast waiting just down the road.
