The Hall Estate, Bradford-on-Avon
Holt Rd, Bradford-on-Avon BA15 1AJ
Set behind private gates on the eastern edge of Bradford on Avon, The Hall Estate is a place where several centuries of British history sit unusually close together. At its centre stands a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion, built in 1610 at the height of the town’s wool trade prosperity. Over the centuries, the house has passed through aristocratic intrigue, industrial ambition and engineering innovation, each leaving its mark on what remains one of Wiltshire’s most significant historic estates.
The house was once home to the Duchess of Kingston, whose scandal-filled life brought notoriety, before being acquired in 1848 by Stephen Moulton. From here, the Moulton family helped establish Britain’s rubber industry through the adjacent mills. That spirit of invention continued into the twentieth century with Dr Alex Moulton, whose pioneering work on rubber suspension transformed the original Mini and led to the creation of the distinctive small-wheeled Moulton bicycle, still manufactured on the estate today. Following his death in 2012, the property was placed into the care of the Alex Moulton Charitable Trust, securing its future for public access, conservation and education.
Staying at The Hall Estate is an experience shaped by that legacy. Three individually styled ensuite rooms are set across separate floors of the house, each named for former residents. The Moulton Room offers classic grandeur, with a four-poster bed, stained glass windows and views over the gardens. The Eric Room feels more intimate, named in memory of Charles “Eric” Moulton, who was killed in the First World War aged just 26. The Kingston Room nods to the estate’s Georgian chapter. Guests are welcomed with breakfast baskets, quality toiletries, robes and thoughtful touches, while discreet self-service check-in and daily housekeeping keep things relaxed rather than formal.
Beyond the rooms, the estate opens out into seven acres of landscaped grounds. Terraced gardens, clipped yew hedges, ponds, rock gardens and hidden corners encourage slow exploration, with views framed deliberately and rewarded often. Guided tours run throughout the year in small groups, offering insight into four hundred years of stories, from wool merchants and scandal to rubber manufacturing and modern design.
The Hall Estate also hosts events, outdoor cinema, theatre, live music and weddings, with exclusive use of the grounds for ceremonies. More than a historic house, it remains a living place, one where conservation, education and enjoyment exist side by side, and where staying overnight offers a rare chance to become part of an ongoing story.
