The Kirkmichael Arms, Ayrshire
3-5 Straiton Rd, Kirkmichael, Maybole KA19 7PH
Tucked away in the South Ayrshire village of Kirkmichael, The Kirkmichael Arms is a proper country pub with a seriously accomplished kitchen. Michelin-recommended and named Best Scottish Pub at the 2025 Scotsman Scran Awards, it combines the warmth and character of a traditional village inn with cooking that makes it a destination in its own right.
At the helm is Melbourne-born chef and owner Justin Galea, whose career has taken him from acclaimed Australian kitchens to Turnberry before eventually bringing him to Kirkmichael. His approach puts Scotland’s natural larder first, building relationships with local farmers, hunters, fishers, foragers and artisan producers to source ingredients at their best.
Much of the work happens from scratch in the kitchen. Salmon, garlic, leeks and venison are smoked in-house, bacon is cured, butter churned and bread baked using traditional techniques. The resulting menus change with the seasons and availability of produce, combining Scottish ingredients with classical French technique and influences gathered from much further afield.
That might mean local langoustines with southern Thai flavours, venison empanadas, carefully prepared Scottish beef or a yellow coconut curry, alongside elevated versions of the familiar pub dishes you would expect to find beside a roaring fire. Sunday lunch receives the same attention, with individually prepared roasts and an extensive choice of meats, fish, sides and sauces.
Despite the quality of the cooking, The Kirkmichael Arms deliberately avoids the formality of fine dining. The historic pub remains at the centre of village life, welcoming families, locals, visitors and dogs into a relaxed bar with real ales, carefully selected wines and an extensive collection of Scottish whisky.
Around 20 minutes from Ayr and within easy reach of the Ayrshire coast, Turnberry, Royal Troon, Culzean Castle and Burns Country, it is well worth building into a wider day exploring the region.
For anyone who loves exceptional food but would rather enjoy it in the warmth of a characterful country pub, The Kirkmichael Arms delivers exactly that – ambitious, produce-led Scottish cooking without the pretence.
