The Naight House, Gloucester GL2 8JJ

Set on the banks of the River Severn just outside Gloucester, The Naight House is the sort of bed and breakfast that feels deeply tied to its surroundings. Hidden amongst three acres of mature gardens and woodland, this historic house combines Georgian character, thoughtful interiors and a quiet sense of retreat, all within easy reach of the Cotswolds, Forest of Dean and Welsh borders.

The property’s origins stretch back to the 16th century, though much of the house standing today was shaped during the Georgian era. Its unusual name comes from the old word for “island”, a reference to the semi-island position it occupies beside the river. That connection to nature still defines the experience here. Gardens shift dramatically with the seasons, from snowdrops lining the riverbank in winter to blossom trees in spring and colourful borders alive with dragonflies through late summer.

Guest accommodation is calm, spacious and individually designed. The Paisley Room overlooks the rear gardens and silver birch trees, with a king-sized bed, seating area and soft patterned interiors inspired by the traditional Paisley motif. The Ikat Room offers dual-aspect views across both gardens alongside a super king-sized bed and generous ensuite with separate bath and shower. Throughout the house, small details feel properly considered, from homemade biscuits to eco-conscious toiletries presented in refillable glass jars.

Beyond the bedrooms, guests are encouraged to settle in slowly. A dedicated reception room offers coffee, homemade cake and shelves of local maps and books, whilst the gardens themselves invite long afternoons outdoors.

Breakfast is a highlight. Served around a large communal table or outside in the garden on warmer mornings, it begins with homemade yoghurt, pastries, fruit and locally sourced produce before moving onto cooked options including full English breakfasts or smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. Ingredients are carefully chosen from nearby suppliers wherever possible.

Perfectly placed for exploring Gloucester Cathedral, Cheltenham, the Forest of Dean and riverside walks directly from the garden gate, The Naight House offers something increasingly rare — a stay that feels genuinely peaceful and good for the soul.
