In the north Cotswolds village of Paxford, between Chipping Campden and Moreton-in-Marsh, The Old Mission Church is a sensitively restored 1866 school and church reimagined as a distinctive self-catering stay. Architect-designed and award-winning, it balances historic architecture with thoughtful contemporary design.

The exterior remains true to its origins, with honey-coloured stone and traditional proportions. Inside, the building opens into a dramatic vaulted space where stained-glass windows, original doors and restored architectural features frame a contemporary open-plan layout. A bespoke kitchen with central island flows into the living and dining area, anchored by a wood-burning stove beneath the full height of the church interior.

The property sleeps four guests across two king-size en-suite bedrooms. The ground-floor master suite features a freestanding bath within the room alongside a separate shower room. Above, a glass and steel staircase leads to the mezzanine ‘Pod’, where the second king bedroom overlooks the living space behind a glazed screen that offers privacy while maintaining the architectural connection.

Enclosed front and rear gardens provide both a south-facing landscaped seating area and a secluded rear patio overlooking open countryside. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome, and footpaths begin directly from the door.

Featured on George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations in 2022, The Old Mission Church was winner of the Muddy Stilettos ‘Best Boutique Stay’ award for Gloucestershire & Worcestershire and went on to be named one of the top five boutique stays in the UK nationally.

Often booked for birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions, it works beautifully as a romantic break for two, a stay for two couples, or a small friends or family gathering. Not suitable for children, though babes in arms are welcome.
