42 Mill St, Pontypridd CF37 2SN

In the heart of Pontypridd’s Mill Street Quarter, Zucco has become far more than somewhere to grab a coffee. Part café, part creative community space and part specialist coffee workshop, this modern independent spot blends strong hospitality roots with a genuine passion for coffee done properly.

Opened in 2022, Zucco was built around the idea of creating a welcoming space for people to slow down, connect and spend time well. That atmosphere runs through everything here, from the carefully brewed coffee and fresh juices to the relaxed interiors and regular collaborations with local artists and pop-ups. By day, it’s a laid-back café serving focaccia, smoothies and expertly made coffee. By night, Fridays and Saturdays shift into cocktails, local beers and a more intimate evening atmosphere.

But what increasingly sets Zucco apart are its barista workshops. Held behind closed doors inside the café itself, these small-group sessions offer a hands-on introduction to the craft of making genuinely good coffee. Limited to just six people at a time, the workshops are relaxed, practical and designed for anyone wanting to better understand what actually happens behind the espresso machine.

Sessions begin with coffee’s journey from cherry to cup before moving into the essentials of espresso extraction, dialling in, milk steaming and latte art. Guests work directly on a La Marzocco machine using Allpress coffee, learning how to pour consistent espresso and create everything from simple hearts through to more advanced latte art patterns. Whether starting from scratch or refining existing skills, the experience feels personal, approachable and genuinely immersive.

There’s also a deeper story behind Zucco itself. Owner family roots in Pontypridd hospitality stretch back generations, from the once well-known John & Maria’s restaurant to the long-running Café Royale. That history gives Zucco a sense of continuity that feels increasingly rare — a modern café shaped by decades of understanding what makes people return.

Warm, thoughtful and deeply community-driven, Zucco captures the feeling of a modern independent café at its best whilst offering one of South Wales’ most engaging coffee workshop experiences.
